Quoy's Halfbeak or PutPut Caught At Woodland Jetty

Quoy's Halfbeak, Quoy's Garfish [Hyporhamphus Quoyi] also know as PutPut is similar to the Blackbarred Halfbeak but has no spots on its body. Its beak is also shorter and red in colour at its tip. Behaviour is simiar to the Blackbarred Halfbeak as well. Effective baits to use are prawn meat and small shrimps. Anglers prefer the blackbarred over this one.

Quoy's Halfbeaks are pretty greedy fishes and are easy to catch. The fact that they swim in groups makes it easier as they race against each other for your bait. Prawn meat and shrimps are usually used to catch them but bread may also work. In large unspooked schools, they'll take artificial baits such as 'tamban hooks' readily. Berlying some of your baits will help keep the entire group of halfbeaks swimming close to you and makes them easier to catch. Halfbeaks will eventually get spooked after a large number of their group members are being caught, they become wary of your bait and are very hesitant in taking them.

Quoy's Halfbeaks can be found all round our shores throughout the year. During halfbeak seasons, lots of anglers can be seen at jetties targetting for them. Sight casting is probably the best way to catch them; meaning spotting where the halfbeaks are precisely and casting your bait towards them. A pair of polaroid sunglasses is essential for sight casting. Use of single hook with float is recommended. More hooks tend to get the entire rig entangled easily when the halfbeak jumps and flips during hookup.

Hardtail Scad [Megalaspis Cordyla] also know as Ngeh Buoy 硬尾 [Hokkien] or Ikan Cincaru [Malay] is often encountered in school(s). They move with the current and feed from midwater to surface which often can be seen and heard from a distance away. Can be caught using sabiki jigs but are more effective with use of small shrimps. Berlying some bait will help keep the school from moving on with the current.

Marine Otters Spotted At Woodland Jetty 2013

A group of Marine Otter spotted at Woodland Jetty or Woodland Waterfront they mainly inhabits rocky shorelines with abundant seaweed and small fishes, and infrequently visits estuaries and freshwater rivers. It appears to select habitats with surprisingly high exposure to strong swells and winds, unlike many other otters, which prefer calmer waters. Caves and crevices in the rocky shorelines may provide them with the cover they need, and often a holt will have no land access at high tide. Marine otters avoid sandy beaches.

Little is known about the diet of marine otters, but their primary prey is believed to be crab, shrimp, mollusks, and fish.

Marine otters are most often seen individually or in small groups of up to three. They are difficult to spot, swimming low in the water, exposing only their heads and backs. It is not known whether they are territorial, as males are occasionally seen fighting, yet fights have also been observed even between mating pairs. Fighting takes place on prominent rocks above the waterline, which are also used for resting, feeding, and grooming. Marine otters have also been observed feeding cooperatively on large fish, but it is not known how common the practice is.

The otters are diurnal, primarily active in the daytime.
