Mr Chiam and Ah Guan cutting up 3 Yellowtail Barracuda [Sphyraena Flavicauda] also know as Saw Kun 沙君[Hokkien] or Ikan Kacang [malay] caught at Woodland Jetty.

This is a smaller species of barracuda compared the Pickhandle Barracuda. It can be differentiated by its bright yellow tail, coarser scales and they don't have the faint vertical bars on its body as the Pickhandles do. But like its larger cousin, the yellowtail have sharp cutting teeth. Because of their small size, they aren't as successful in snipping off our nylon lines as the larger species.

The Yellowtail Barracuda [Sphyraena Flavicauda] also know as Saw Kun 沙君[Hokkien] or Ikan Kacang [malay] can usually be found hanging in shallow reefs and Jetty. They feed on small fishes such as Tamban or Assam and shrimps, and can sometimes be caught on tamban jigs. It is a much better tasting fish compared to the Pickhandle, but beware of its many fine bones when eating them.

  • hey, i live near the woodlands jetty and go there fishing quite a few times, but i cant seem to get any fish other than tamban once in a while. is there any tips to fishing there?

  • There're no Tamban since 14th oct 2010 due to water condition, as for fishing for tamban try using tamban jig with smaller hook size 3 or 4 or try jiging for Assam [Five-spot Herring] and using it as bait you might land yourself something big.

  • Thanks for the information. May i know what type of jig is suitable for Assam or how does it look like? Also does lures work on the jetty?

  • Go to woodland jetty and observe how people hook assam [hook assam and not fishing] you might get to learn from the pro there on how to hook assam. You can also use bigger hook size tamban jig to hook yourself some assam as bait as for using lure i think it a waste of time unless you know what you're doing [always line bust]. Try luring along reclaim land with rocky edge where you might find yourself some Grouper,Barramundi and Mangrove Jack etc.
