Squaretail Mullet or Diamond-Scale Mullet [Liza Vaigiensis] also known as Chow Orh 草乌, 鯔魚[chinese] or Belanak [malay] a very common fish found in canals and goes in as far into them as far as the tide reaches. Abundant all round our shores, often sighted swimming in schools. Mullets are cautious fish and easily spooked. The common bait to catch them would be bread. They have small mouth and nibbles on your bait, hardly swallowing it whole. That makes it very difficult and frustrating to get your hook set. Berlying some bread before fishing them is a good idea to get them into a frenzy feeding mood, causing them to be less cautious and more aggressive in taking your bait.

Squaretail Mullet or Diamond-Scale Mullet [Liza Vaigiensis] also known as Chow Orh 草乌, 鯔魚[chinese] or Belanak [malay] can be good eating fish and are excellent live baits for catching sea bass. Avoid catching mullets for consumption where the water is polluted. (places like canals near city and industrial areas)
