Spotted Sicklefishes [Drepane Punctata] also know as Cao Xi 曹喜[Chinese] or Ikan Daun Baharu [Malay] are common in estuaries and places with muddy seabed, including offshore waters. They can be found solitary or small groups feeding on what they can scavenge from the seabed. Sea worms and prawn meat works pretty well in catching sicklefishes, but hook size should not be too large when targeting for them as they have small mouth. They will take full size prawns as well but it takes awhile for them to chew their way through.

On the angler's end, it can sometimes be perceive as a small fish nibbling on the bait. A well timed strike can increase more successful hook ups. The fight from sicklefish is not too sluggish nor fast but can do short bursts especially from larger ones. Typical size encounter locally ranges from 300g - 1kg but they can grow much bigger.

Meat quality is average with slight muddy taste. Proper preparation and seasoning can make this fish a good dish and is sometimes served in restaurants.

Hound Needlefish [Tylosurus Crocodilus Crocodilus] also know as Tek Long Song 尖嘴鱼 [Chinese] or Todak [Malay] are commonly found along local shorelines as well as offshore reefs. They're primary food would be small baitfishes which they prey near water surface, including halfbeaks. During chases, Hound needlefish or Todak can be seen jetting on the surface water for a brief moment. Hound Needlefish or Todak found near jetties or places that are commonly fished are generally more caution than offshore ones. They'll inspect your bait carefully and ignores dead baits most of the time. However, they are irresistable to live baits like tambans, prawns and small squids.

When a Hound Needlefish [Tylosurus Crocodilus Crocodilus] also know as Tek Long Song 尖嘴鱼 [Chinese] or Todak [Malay] takes your bait, it usually holds it in its beak and move a distance away before continue to swallow the bait. Setting your hook when the bait is still in its jaw usually end up with the bait and hook flying back out. This is because the beak is hard and thin, making it difficult for hooks to penetrate. Setting of hook should only be done when the needlefish has swallowed the bait. Do take note that gut hooked needlefish will probably not survive after you've caught it. They can't survive very long without water and the swallowed hook will like injure its internal organs. If the fish is gut hooked and you plan to release it, cut the line and release it back immediately.
